In the server config file you need to set an rconpassword. Then set it in your client as well.

Look in your server config for something like:

set rconpassword ""

Stick your rcon password in between the quotes. If there is no rcon password set, then the rcon will not responod.

Not private password, rconpassword.

In the server config, make sure there is a line like this:

set rconpassword "mykicka$$password"

Then in your personal config for the game, you can add the same line, or simply type it in the console before joining the server (do it before you join so you don't accidentally type it in the chat and broadcast it - heh heh).

From that point on you can do rcon commands in your console (after joining the server) like this:

rcon status

The Guides section has several documents that go into more detail as well.

Private password is used to reserve slots on your server for people who have set the password on their client. It works with the private clients.

This is an excerpt from Bull's dedicated server guide:

Code:
rconPassword yourpasswordhere
//Sets your [URL="http://www.mohadmin.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=18&c=3"]RCON[/URL] password to allow you Remote Administration

//Finally, put a blank line at end of the config

//***********************************
//Popular stuff that DOES NOT seem to work, but is available.

//set g_motd your message //message of the day ?
//set g_motdString message //message of the day?
//set g_teamForceBalance 1 //team balancing
//set sv_privateClients xx //private slots on the server
//set privatePassword xxx //password for private slots
//************************************

Check for other scripts being called. Maybe one of them is resetting it. Can you remote to the host box to see the server console?

What do you mean can I remote to the host box to see the server console? By using the "~" or the Server_Setup.exe? If the "~" way, it says No rconpassword set for the server, if the Server_Setup.exe way, it says Error rconpassword "-----" or something like that...

The server console may not be available to you. Depends on the server, what permissions you have, etc.

Have you turned on logging? You should be able to download a log file (qconsole.log is the file name). When the server starts, it executes all the scripts and you can see it "executing server.cfg". each config file that gets executed is called out. Check them out, especially anything that is non-standard, and see if anything is clearing the rconpassword on the server. You can also launch a test server on your own machine using the same files as your server. Then you can see the server console and look through it to see what is clearing the rcon password.

You can also post your server config (**** out your actual passwords ;) ) and we can check it to see if there are any obvious problems.

You left out a crucial line....

set rconPassword "***********"

Without that, you get exactly the message you have been getting. Be sure to set the rconpassword the same on your client.
