I ordered a cheap dedicated server and am about to get the access to it. I can run a dedicated server from my lan but never had to install on a distant machine. I have chosen a Windows XP SP2 system and will have access to the server with the "distant desktop" (don't know the exact English name), the connection feature you get by launching mstsc.exe.

Do I have to install the whole game (Moh:BT) on the server? If not, what are the files/directories to be copied on the server HDD? And if yes, what is the best way of installing the game on a distant machine?

Thanks a lot.

Most game hosting services will install it for you. If you simply rented a server box, then you will probably have to do the install yourself. The largest part of the game are the graphics, maps, etc. So you will need to copy most of it. There is a little you can cut out, but it is not much.

Since Breakthrough is an expansion, you will need MOHAA as well. I don't know if you can skip SpearHead, but if you do you won't have any of those maps on the server.

As far as installing from the server, if you are using remote desktop or terminal services, you will essentially be on the server desktop just as you woulld on your own. The biggest difference is you can't pop anything into the CDROM.

For a dedicated server, the easiest approach is to take a full install from your desktop, zip or compress it as much as you can, and transfer it to your server (you could start the ftp service on your server an upload it). Since this will be a very large upload, you may want to break it into several files to better handle and recover from a dropped connection.

I don't recall what files you can safely dump but since the pk3s constitute the bulk of the data you have to transmit, you won't save a lot by removing other files (in relative terms) and you could avoid headaches trying to figure out what was omitted that should not have been. One thing you should get rid of are any mods that you won't be using on the server (like custom maps that you will not be running). Some of the MOHAA and MOHSH pk3s are overwritten by MOHBT but I have also found MOHAA portions of the pk3s that MOHBT still uses, and trying to pick out what you can extract would be problematic.

Because your home connection is probably not the greatest upload connection, a better approach would be to have a friend with a server transfer his files to you (again, FTP is probably the most straight forward approach - just set it up to require a login and shut the service down when you are not using it both for security reasons and to improve performance).

Thanks guys for your help. I think I will upload all the files and maybe when I'm courageous, I will try removing little by little.
So, may I understand that a "simple" transfer of the games folders to the server drive will suffice? No installation is required?
