After my first night of playing Homefront, I came away feeling that I had had some fun despite any initial dodginess I came across over the course of the night. The game has just released, but I am hoping you guys will work hard to keep your new found customer base by fixing any obvious glitches and exploits asap and serving the needs of the server admins aswell as the playerbase.

I have to say back pre-release day of Homefront for Europe, I eagerly uninstalled Black Ops AND BC2 as I was already tired of those games.
Homefront did not let me down!

DAMAGE
My biggest concern was going to be the damage or time to kill but that was soon put to rest as I found it to be somewhere between COD HC mode and Normal damage mode (a good comparison that I heard elsewhere which holds true)..
This is acceptable and anything higher than this would have spoilt it totally for me.
Snipers do seem really easy to use, I would have liked their to be some more damage drop off. Maybe there is and its not that noticable. I don't feel like I am constantly getting 1 shotted. There are times I get hit and still have the time to respond by taking cover which is a good thing. I'll leave wep specific feedback out for now as I have not played enough yet. Initially it seems most weapons are good enough and not under or overpowered. Just depends on your usage.

HUD
For the record an option to remove some hud elements would be good for those that want it but adding a server side option would be best IMHO.
This way servers also gain another way to retain customers via individuality somewhat.
I have been reading some of the posts here regarding cluttered GUI and other than the mid-screen text that pops up I don't find anything to be of a major distraction myself but then I have just come from Black Ops so my vision is slightly accustomed to onscreen text spam.

VEHICLES
Really easy to use, not used the chopper as a pilot much yet but I actually had a ton of fun just being a 'spotter' and painting targets.
I really like the sound of the weapons and the tanks don't feel like they are getting stuck on wooden fences as I read elsewhere.

DRONES

The drones have their uses and I was pleased when I found out you could actually leave the drone view (with the drone still active) change your actual on-foot avatar position and then continue to move your drone. I think thats a great addition and I can imagine some uses for this already such as covering 2 angles at once ;)

MY SETUP
core2duo e6600@2.8Ghz
Catalyst 10.11
4x1GB ddr2 ram @ 800Mhz
ATI XFX hd4890 1GB vram
1920x1080 res @ 60Hz
Win7 64bit

FPS
The first thing I did after installation was to go into Practice Mode and check my FPS. Knowing it would be somewhat in-accurate without other players about I just tried to tweak so that I had as close to 60FPS as possible.

After tweaking and realoding a few times I came to realise that turning stuff down was not really having much effect (in the actual multiplayer) and the framerate seemed to be jumping between 30-50FPS depending on location in the map.
A mate of mine commented that it seemed to be locked to around 35fps as his system is much faster and recent than mine and he had the same fps.
(Vsync was not on).

Regardless I have to say wether its 35fps or 50 it does feel about the same (playing on 20-50 ping servers). Its actually quite smooth although I know there will be some who will not be happy because their £1500 setup is only getting 50fps but it does not matter if the game plays smooth.
Hopefully the next patch will help us get a more consistant 60fps on lower end systems. But please don't break stuff by trying to fix it as so many other companies end up doing. As it is, it is playable.

ANIMATIONS
Some of the infantry animations can seem a bit 'jerky' at times. Not sure if I just saw some dodgy characters or not but there seemed to be a lot of twitching on different servers.

ANTI CHEAT
I have already come across several speed hacks and botters who manage to snipe you between 3 lamp posts and 2 different windows from the other side of the map. Not saying thats impossible, but the speed of the aim is a giveaway.
Not too sure about the Killcam, does it attempt to show you the path of the projectile? Thats what it seemed like to me.

I have to add I am really concerned about the lack of PunkBuster support inclusion thats becoming a trend in most recent FPS titles.
It is about time PB beefed up their support tools as they are a bit dated now.
If this is an effort from companies to get them to do that by boycotting PB anti-cheat product, then fair enough.

/AC rant

Battle Commander
I really like this feature. I don't think it spoils the game play as it does not give away the exact location. When I had been assigned as a Threat target I didn't feel like I was being instantly spotted with a big arrow over my head.

Perks System
I'll admit to it now, I did not RTFM and I jumped straight in so this feedback is regarding intuitive analysis. By the end of the first session early this morning as I was browsing through the options I came across the perk system. I had 2 points to spend and some unlocked abilities I could spend it on. To keep it short and sweet, I'm glad you didn't include stuff like extra damage (although increased blast radius is present).
I have yet to tell how much hip fire perk actually assists but overall it doesn't feel like these are essential to play with or 'must have' so far.
Just optional which is good IMO.

SUMMARY

We'll see how day 2 plays out but so far I am enjoying this!
Roll on VAC ban wave 1, Homefront Patch 1 and keep up the good work!

I may be able to through some light on the system settings and fps thing. Just like Frontlines, homefront has a feature that once selected will reduces your settings to maintain a descent FPS. It's called FPS Smoothing you might want to play with it some. People on the forums are suggesting you turn it off, I always liked it in Frontlines but some advise against it.

Framerate smoothing does what it sounds: it is intended to cause there to be less variation in your frame rate at any given time i.e.e smaller spikes and dips. However, overall it lowers your framerate so there's really not much reason to have it on unless you're haivng some kind of technical issue ive never heard of that would make your framerate jump around for no reason.

My only issue with the game on a technical point is the lack of CrossfireX support, but it will need a driver update for that.

Roll on VAC ban wave 1
From what I read on a few hack sites, VAC isn't even enabled yet. Also how long before it bans is another story.

One popular CoDBO hack was released on Nov 22, 2010 and still remains undetected (it's been updated with each patch). One popular MW2 one was released on May 18, 2010 and detection posts started around Nov 4, 2010. That's undetected for over 5 months. Both are completely free and accessible to anyone.

Smooth freamerates = NO, to the OP, your friend has capped himself to 35FPS because I bet he has smooth framerates turned on.

Its the first thing I turn off myself.

EDIT #2: Firstly, Thx Muchas Hellsonix for all that - some very good feedback there...:salute:

Yeah, it's pretty obvious people are using ESPs and Aimbots IMO & would guesstimate any hacks for the Unreal 3 engine will work in this game as well? If you look at how many games Valve/VAC have to support (and Blops being huge) & I would guesstimate that have ~ 5 people? working on catching them - think the onslaught of losers hacking will be too much.

Never mind they don't accept submissions or link sites (supposedly u can send to Steam Forum admins) & ESPECIALLY that there's no 2nd level of support like PBBans - it's pretty foolish IMO to think Valve's going to be ahead (or even keep up) with the hacks.

I understand why developers are going this way though - as with Steamworks they can help stop piracy (and Evenbalance seems to care less if they stay in biz it seems) - so I can't really knock them for going that route - just don't hold out much hope it will get any better - just worse as time goes on.

Add to this that it seems lately it's like a lifestyle/culture with a lot of young gamers nowadays (yeah, I know I sound like an ole fogey PC Gamer here...lol) to hack & even a big increase in going after the consoles as well. Read recently another hacker is going after the new PS3 firmware to try take it down again...

Edit: Could be wrong about a lot of the above & would certain appreciate some direction if so - over just being wrong about a lot of it...lol

I have to agree with nearly everything Hellsonix put about the game in his post.

It's a good mix, needs a few patches to sort out issues, but nothing the Devs can't handle.

I'd just like to add about the performance issue that people are experiencing & throw in my tuppence.

Intel i7 920 @ 3.2GHz
6GB OCZ 1600MHz DDR3
ATi 5850 1GB DDR5
Catalyst 11.2
1920x1080 res @ 60Hz
Win7 64bit Ultimate

My frames have been dropping over the day & now I'm lucky if I peak over 30FPS. The Smooth Framerate is OFF but I'm still getting shocking performance, no matter what settings I chose.

Something just isn't right in the optimisation department for the game and the 30 page thread on the Homefront forums shows it's not the odd few that are suffering.

I'm sure the Devs will find a good fix for it so we can run at the proper speeds again.

Excellent game once it's patched up a bit. :D

So after some more playing heres some things I noticed that IMO need some attention (I won't go into the obvious stuff like AntiCheat as hopefully that will be turned on this week).

  1. Possible to get rooted to the spot either as a drone or on foot. Not sure exactly what causes this but sometimes activating a drone or death is the only way out (not chat box related either).
  2. Squad minimap member icons would be better if they were a seperate colour to the rest of your team. The names are blue but the icons are ALL green.
  3. Scrollwheel sensitivity seems a little too high. Switching to secondary wep can be troublesome as it goes to pistol and then back to primary even when careful sometimes.
  4. Think about adding a server side 'weapon limit per team' option (example: limit sniper rifles to 2 per team).
  5. Add an admin command to kick by steamID (not player name) due to the fact that some special characters are un-readable so the player name cannot be accurately typed in for the kick/ban.
  6. Switching from driver seat to gunner is 1 click (6) but switching back to driver is 4 clicks more (6666). Maybe add another button to move back in the seat sequence (at the moment it only goes forwards afaik).
  7. Unable to hold EMP in hand, when you trigger it it gets thrown immediately. I can understand if this was done so players could counter drones but it makes it quite hard to aim a further shot at times. A tap should still be sufficient to insta-throw whilst also being able to click-hold the EMP for precision aiming.

Thats all I can think of right now.

A LOT of those are being addressed in the upcoming patch, as far as vehicle seats, I map them f1,f2,f3 etc, so i can just jump where i like.

Also be sure Mouse Smoothing is OFF, acceleration is enabled ny default.

I had problems with my mouse being way too fast.

If you are having problems try this:

Go to your my documents folder Then My Games Then Homefront Then GCGame Then Config Open file called GCInput The below command is what you need to have (its 6 rows down from the top) benablemousesmoothing=False Save file and close file.

It fixed it for me.

Thanks will try this, im now enjoying the game more since i almost doubled my FPS (now at 40-45 instead of 20-25) but at the detriment of nice graphics... With no AA or AF the game doesnt look great at all  - must keep tweaking. Anyone know of a 3rd party app to tweak the INIs?

Good to hear! One thing regarding the player kick, what I meant was to be able to kick by playerslot number rather than have to type their name or find their steamID. Maybe this is already possible, I'm not familiar with UE3's admin commands.
...as far as vehicle seats, I map them f1,f2,f3 etc, so i can just jump where i like.
I guess mapping the seats to keys is the better thing to do than cycling through them, I'll have to take a look at that.

I had already turned mine off. Maybe its just my mouse but sometimes when I use scroll wheel to change weps it sees 1 scroll click as 2 for some reason (Logitech mx518).
