Seen a few people having some problems so I collated a list from various sources that may possibly help those with trouble running the game.

Homefront Errors, Crashes, Freezes, and Fixes

1# Pre-Order Shotgun Unlock Code Not Working
THQ have apologized for the issue and they claim it to fix it as soon as possible and then you can have your 870 Express Shotgun

2# Homefront No Sound – Fix
If you are not hearing any sound or you can only hear the cutscenes, try the following workarounds:

Make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for your sound card.
Remove My Docs\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\GCEngine.ini in your documents and restart the game.
Go to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\GCGame\Config” . Edit DefaultEngine.ini with notepad and search MaxChannels. Change the value from 128 to 64.
Reinstalling Directx may fix the problem.
Change audio from Surround (4.1, 5.1..etc) to simple 2.1. To change this head to control panel and then sound and audio settings.
If nothing works then try removing the game completely and then re-download (From Steam) the game for a fresh install.

3# PhsyX Error – Not Installed Properly
If you have PhsyX already installed in your PC, remove it and then reinstall it to solve the problem.

4# Homefront Multiplayer – Dedicated Servers Dead/Not responding
It is most probably due to servers being overloaded. The issue has been taken into account and soon more servers will be available to solve the issue.

5# Default Resolution Won’t Change

Try Changing the aspect ratio of your monitor.If you are using crossfire, disable it and then you will be able to change the resolution.
Or you can change your config file manually to change the resolution. You can find it in My Documents/My Games/homefront folder and then system config file.

6# The Game won’t Load – An unexpected graphics error occurred. The application needs to exit
Find GCEngine.ini file in system settings and change AllowD3D10=True to False. Make sure that CompatLevelGPU is set to 1 not 0.

7# Homefront – Low Performance – FPS Fix
If you are among those facing low performance with the game even when meeting the recommended requirements. You can try following workarounds to boost the performance:

Head to C:\Users\admin\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\CGEngine. Open the file and find AllowD3D10 command. Change value “True” to “False”.

8# Player keeps on moving
Just disconnect any joysticks attached to the computer to fix the problem.

9# Can’t Join Multiplayer
If you are not able to select any option in multiplayer and your game freezes, your firewall might be blocking the game.

10# “Failed to Run Install Script” Error
If you are facing this error during installation then try re-installing Microsoft visual C++ redistributable 2005. If it does not help then try running a windows update and that should resolve the issue.

11# Homefront Error (55)
If you encounter this error then delete all of your local content and do a fresh install.

12# Homefront Motion Blur Fix
If you are experiencing weird motion blur in the game, turn it off from the options menu.

13# Homefront – Game Crashes Everything I Join The Server

14# Homefront Lockups When Searching For Servers
Wait and it will be resolve as the game tries to download all the servers.

15# Homefront – Performance Fix – Lag Fix

Right-click Homefront in your Steam Library
Select Properties
Ensure that you are in the General tab
Click Set Launch Options
Add -d3d9 and -onethread (So that it looks like this: -d3d9 -onethread). Note that -onethread disables cutscenes.
Press OK and close Homefront’s Properties window.
Start Homefront.

16# Homefront Stutters and FPS Fix – High End Rig
If you are on SLI or Crossfire, try running the game on Single GPU to resolve the low performance issues.

17# Homefront Mouse Controls – Fix

Go to your \steam\steamapps\common\homefront\engine\config directory. Make a copy of all those files before you change anything just for backup purposes.
Then open baseinput.ini – at the top of the file is a section called [Engine.PlayerInput]
Under that section, you will see “bEnableMouseSmoothing=true”, change this to “bEnableMouseSmoothing=false”
Then right under that, in the same section, add the line “bViewAccelerationEnabled=false”
After this your in-game mouse settings may reset, or you may have to adjust your sensitivity because non-accelerated sensitivity is different. But after that, you should notice the mouse control is much improved.

18# Poor Framerates in Multiplayer
If the above performance fix doesn’t work for you, try this:
Run the game in DirectX 9.

19# Where to Find Homefront Config File

C:\Users\\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\GCEngine.ini

20# How to Force DirectX 9 in Homefront
Force dx9 with -d3d9 command line in steam launch option if you have bad performance. You also need to set AllowD3D10 to false in config.

21# Homefront – No Sound Fix
Go to windows control panel – sound – configure and set 2:1 stereo to avoid sound loss.

22# ATI Crossfire with Low FPS – Fix

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\Binaries
In there you will find the homefront.exe that runs the game. Rename this .exe to “UE3.EXE” and relaunch the game. Crossfire will be enabled.

23# Game Crashes to Desktop – Startup
Make sure you have updated your graphics card drivers, DirectX and PhysX. If it still doesn’t resolve the issue try running the game in DirectX 9.

Homefront – Low Performance – Low FPS – Lag – Fixes
Always run installers and redist packages as Administrator, this will make sure all settings and files are correctly copied to your computer.
Always do a clean install of new video drivers if needed.
Run the game as administrator to ensure that it has admin rights to overwrite configs and game files in it’s directory.
Turn off steam cloud for Homefront will prevent overwriting of your config.
Try updating PhysX or disabling it if you have performance problems.
Verify Game cache in steam and defrag game cache files before playing.
Try playing in Windowed mode
Try reducing draw distance.
Turn off Vsync and frame smoothing in config. Vsync will typically drop your framerate to 30 if it goes under 60 at some point, which will seem really laggy. Solution is to either enable d3d triple buffering with d3doverrider or to use frame capping variables in the config .ini files. but best is to disable vsync and frame capping altogether.
Disable mouse smoothing with benablemousesmoothing=False in
C:\Users\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\GCInput.ini
Unplug saitek controllers or any USB controllers to avoid performance loss.
disable fps cap and remove mouse lag:

1) close the game
2) go to ..\My Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config
3) open GCEngine.ini
4) find and edit: bSmoothFrameRate=false UseVsync=false UseFPSSmoothing=false
5) save and close GCEngine.ini
6) open GCInput.ini
7) find and edit: bEnableMouseSmoothing=false
8) save and close GCInput.ini 9) load the game, click options, click system, check and uncheck v sync, click apply (this forces the game to read the updated configs)

turn off start movies:

1) close the game
2) go to ..\My Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config
3) open GCEngine.ini
4) find and edit: bShouldStopMovieAtEndOfLoadMap=true ;+StartupMovies=LegalScreen_PC ;+StartupMovies=THQ ;+StartupMovies=ThreeLogos ;+StartupMovies=DE_Logo ;+StartupMovies=NVidia ;+StartupMovies=HomeIsLogo
5) save and close GCEngine.ini that's it!
if any of the above steps don't work for you, i suggest you start clean by deleting the auto-generated user configs and editing the master default configs.

here's how: delete user configs:
1) close the game
2) go to ..\My Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config
3) delete GCEngine.ini and GCInput.ini (WARNING: this will erase all of your current Homefront settings)

from here http://www.homefront-game.com/forums/topic/5208

Common Directories
These two INI -- GCEngine.ini and GCInput.ini -- are referenced occasionally in this Homefront Bug Fixes Guide is located below. Be sure to alter the beginning that's in bold to correspond with your operating system, hard drive, and username:

C:\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\GCEngine.ini

The location of the game .exe file is generally the below. Just make sure to alter as necessary to point to the correct Steam folder:

C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\Binaries

You may also need to edit the DefaultEngine.ini file:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\GCGame\Config\DefaultEngine.ini

And...baseinput.ini:

C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\engine\config\baseinput.ini

Fix Homefront Lagging / Stuttering
If your Homefront game has a lot of lag or the frames seem to be skipping, then try changing the launch parameters for it by:
-- Right click your shortcut to the game -> properties -- and add the launch parameter "-compatscale=4"
This will make use of hardware optimization. If your PC is terrible, then try lowering the 4 to 3 or lower.

No Game Music / Audio / Sound for Homefront
This can happen if you're using a normal stereo headset or even just with normal speakers (including PC and Laptop speakers such as the Apple Macintosh / Mac Book Pro). Other users seem to be experiencing low volume level that's near silent. There are a couple of things you can do to try to fix this for the game:
-- Reboot the PC
-- Reinstall the game (not the ideal game solution of course)
-- Update your audio / sound card drivers
-- Disable your HDMI / High End sound ports in the Master Volume Control Panel or via your soundcard driver software
-- Download and Install the DirectX 9.0 Runtime

You can...
1) Go to Start -> Run -- type in DXDIAG
2) Click the "Sound" tab and drag the "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" slider to "No acceleration" for DirectSound

Or try...
1) Go to My Computer -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
2) Under the "Volume" tab in the "Speaker settings" area, click "Advanced", then go to the "Performance" tab
3) Slide "Hardware Acceleration" from "Full" to "None"
4) Slide "Sample rate conversion quality" from "Best" to "Good", then hit "OK"

Another Homefront bug fix...
-- Open DefaultEngine.ini with notepad, then make the following change:

MaxChannels=128 to 64

A newer game fix for Homefront sound not working is below.
Note that this example uses an AC'97 Onboard audio configuration and as such you will need to modify as needed to match your particular hardware settings.
1) Set your audio / speakers to use Stereo by loading the Volume Control Panel
2) Go to the "Playback Devices" area and for your device hit "configure" and use a "Stereo" setup
3) Load DefaultEngine.ini in Notepad and make the add the following line under [ALAudio.ALAudioDevice] (modify the "RealTek" part as needed)

NoHALSupport0=RealTek AC97

Alternatively, you can add:

NoHALSupport0=RealTek AC97
NoHALSupport1=SigmaTel Audio
NoHALSupport2=Realtek HD Audio output
NoHALSupport3=Sound Blaster Audigy
NoHALSupport4=SB Audigy

You might also use NoHALSupport0=IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

Homefront Game Does Not / Fails to Launch / Open, homefront.exe Crashes at Startup With No Error, Black Screen
This seems to be a very common game problem for Homefront. Your screen might flash or show a black screen, then the process / exe crashes as seen in Windows Task Manager. Hopefully a patch will provide a game fix for this Crash to Desktop (CTD) (C2D) game problem. Also, some people seem to be getting the Windows game error "Homefront has stopped working". Keep in mind that this game requires PhysX. Anyway, try these game fixes for it:
-- Try setting the game to Windows XP compatibility mode by right clicking the EXE -> Properties -> Compatibility -- and setting Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
This game fix will only help out Windows 7 / Vista users though.
-- Make sure your GCEngine.ini exists, isn't blank, and isn't set to Read Only (right click the file -> properties -- uncheck read-only)
-- Get & Install the Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Runtime
-- Try launching the game through its EXE instead of through Steam
-- Some people suggest downloading the cracked version from links using RapidShare (RS), MegaShares (MS), MegaUpload (MU), MediaFire (MF), etc...but there's no sense in doing that seeing as how you bought it and want to play multiplayer!

You can also try:
-- Try changing your computer's resolution to something more common
-- Updating your video card / graphics card drivers, as they generally not only contain improvements that help with game lag or stuttering, but also graphics glitches such as pixilation, artifacts on the screen, or odd texture problems. They can fix game glitches too, as well as general incompatibility that can cause black screens on launch. Upgrade your drivers to the latest NVIDIA, ATI, etc. version.
-- Try running your game with admin / administrative privileges or under an admin account (especially if on Vista)

Or the following Homefront Crash to Desktop fix...
-- Locate your GCEngine.ini file and find the following two lines and change them like so:

AllowD3D10=True to AllowD3D10=False
CompatLevelGPU=0 to CompatLevelGPU=1

Another Homefront Crash to Desktop Fix / Black Screen On Launch Fix:
1) Set your Steam server to a different country, which should trigger Steam to download
2) Launch the newly downloaded EXE

Note that if this does not work, then try turning off Steam Cloud and using this method in conjunction with the below method (alter the INI before launch).

And yet Another Homefront game fix that has worked for some is to do the following:
1) Open GCEngine.ini and make the following changes:

Fullscreen=True to Fullscreen=False
AllowD3D10=True to AllowD3D10=False

2) Launch the game, pick your game resolution, enable full screen (if desired), and modify your gaming presets for your PC, then apply the changes
3) Quit Homefront and open the GCEngine.ini again to make the following change:

AllowD3D10=True to AllowD3D10=False

Freezes During Decryption Process / Steam Game Cache Validation
Usually it will freeze / get stuck at 74% percent. I recommend:
-- Simply waiting. Why? Because it may not really be frozen or stuck at all. It may just be taking a long time. Give it A LOT of time to perform this task and eventually it gets passed 74% in many cases.
-- Delete the game entirely (including parts in your Steam folder) and then redownload it from Steam.

Multiple / Two Homefront Completing Installation Messages
If you keep getting this game installation message, then generally that means that Homefront did not preload well. The downloading or install portion must have had a problem. Try re-downloading the game after deleting it.

Game Settings Keep Reverting
If you find that after altering your settings they change back, then try:
-- Making sure your INI files are NOT Read Only or that they even exist / have text in them
-- Disabling Steam Cloud

Fix Mouse Movements or Controls / Disable Hardware Acceleration
If your mouse is acting weird or is too overly sensitive / slow, then try the following:
1) Open baseinput.ini with notepad, locate the line "[Engine.PlayerInput]" and under it add:

bViewAccelerationEnabled=False

2) Make the following edit to the file:

bEnableMouseSmoothing=true to bEnableMouseSmoothing=false

Source: SteamPowered

"Your Connection to the Host has been Lost" or Steam Keeps Disconnecting Game Error
This unfortunately seems to be Steam related. Note that things like firewalls and internet connection stability also affect this.

"The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request. Please try again in a few minutes." Steam Error
Just wait patiently. This is generally a message that pops up when the Steam server is crowded. Try again later! Perhaps during off or weird hours.

Enable / Disable / Turn Off Movies
1) If you want to prevent the movies at the start of the game, then alter the following lines in the DefaultEngine.ini:

bShouldStopMovieAtEndOfLoadMap=true
;+StartupMovies=LegalScreen_PC
;+StartupMovies=THQ
;+StartupMovies=ThreeLogos
;+StartupMovies=DE_Logo
;+StartupMovies=NVidia
;+StartupMovies=HomeIsLogo

2) Now backup -> delete GCEngine.ini & GCInput.ini

Are You Getting Client dropped by server and Warning: Connection Problem's If So This Fix Is For You !
Client dropped by server and Warning: Connection Problem
Question
I am receiving one of the error messages listed below:

WARNING : Connection Problem
Client dropped by server

Answer
If you are receiving these error messages, it is most likely a network connectivity issue interfering with game traffic between your machine and the server you are playing on.

Please use the following process and custom file to troubleshoot the issue:

Exit from Steam completely

Download this custom file: MasterServers.vdf - If the file does not download when clicked, please right click this link and select "Save Target As..."
Place it in your \Steam\config\ folder (You will need to overwrite the current file already in place)
Default location: C:\Program Files\Steam\config\
Right click this updated file and select "Properties"
In the General tab, make sure the "Read-only" box is checked and click OK
Re-start Steam and test the issue
If the issue persists, please complete the rest of this article

A note on this fix:

7# Homefront – Low Performance – FPS Fix
If you are among those facing low performance with the game even when meeting the recommended requirements. You can try following workarounds to boost the performance:

Head to C:\Users\admin\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\CGEngine. Open the file and find AllowD3D10 command. Change value “True” to “False”.

After you make the change, right click on that file, select properties and check mark "read only" then save the file. If you don't it will just go back to "True" after you played and closed the game again.

This fix may bring you a big boost in fps. It did for me.

Need to add "Friends" list not working :(

& the servers I see in the browser are different from everyone else,we cannot get together on a server because the servers I see are NOT the servers my friends see,same name & map but never the same one.Very strange.

I live in Fla,friends that have this game are in Louisiana & Kansas.Not that far from one another.We always find a server in BC2,WaW,BO,but not in HF.I hope they get it fixed soon.

22# ATI Crossfire with Low FPS – Fix

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\homefront\Binaries
In there you will find the homefront.exe that runs the game. Rename this .exe to “UE3.EXE” and relaunch the game. Crossfire will be enabled.
I find if I try this the game will not start.

I did notice that ev when I set FPS smoothing & Vsync to False in the config, then making Read-Only the game would still reset these to True.

This will typically cap your FPS at about 30FPS.

I found that if your FPS is stuck, then while in-game, go to Options, then Tick both FPS Smoothing & Vsync, then APPLY. Then un-tick them both & hit APPLY.

Your FPS should jump back up to acceptable levels.

Head to C:\Users\admin\Documents\My Games\HOMEFRONT\GCGame\Config\CGEngine. Open the file and find AllowD3D10 command. Change value “True” to “False”.
Strange, this seems to have improved the game smoothness, not really FPS as i still sort of maxed at around 45-50 but the game feels much, much better now when remaining the same visually? Am i missing something?

Actually, I found leaving everything default (high) gave me my best FPS (~50 AVG). When I went in and switched the change all setting to medium - my fps went under 30. Also, have the FPS smoothing off myself.

I did find that the "stat fps" command will work (and does show in red when it lags? like the Source engine one) - but have yet to get the "stat net" (Display Network Statistics) command to work...

Thankfully, the game runs well on my machine (Quad 9300/Vista 64/5770) right out of the box. Now if I can just learn how to use all the gadgets and Helis correctly - I might actually be able to contribute more in the game..:p

The "Friends List" is simply not what you think it is. Why would you expect to see your Friends in a SERVER browser?

That TAB is to display Listen Servers hosted by your Friends and works as intended from all reports.

Good thread btw, now a sticky. :salute:

To answer the question:
Why would you expect to see your Friends in a SERVER browser?
Simply because it says FRIENDS in big letters at the top. What I was expecting was to see the servers that my friends were in at the time as other games do. I understand what it's for but that poses the question, Were the devs expecting people to host listing servers with all of the associated problems on a game with dedi server? Why would anyone host a local listing server when we have dedi's... Odd!

A feature that the game is missing replaced by one no one needs...
