Hacking in Homefront...?

Seems to be getting more and more rampant IMO (lots of posts on the Steam Forums) & some folks are claiming that VAC isn't even working right now (and like Maydax posted - so are the hack sites) - can anyone confirm/deny this?

They seem to have had them on day one - so would speculate they're just basic Unreal Engine 3 hacks? Also, saw the notes on the Server page that the kicking players functionality is not working & will be fixed in a patch.

Nothing will kill a game faster IMO than hacks being used in it from the launch - so hopefully Kaos/Valve can somehow get VAC going (if it isn't already) so more and more players stay with the game.

Artificial Aiming has had a VAC loader since shortly after the MW2 bans went out. Completely bypasses VAC rendering it useless.

I have seen hackers in the game since day two after release. One guy was so obvious it was just ridiculous.

VAC is like not even having an Anti-cheat in place. I not sure what games are moving away from punkbuster, but I sure miss not being able to have servers streaming to pbbans. At least all admin that stream are working together to do what the developer and their chosen Anti-cheat can not.

It is out of hand, our server is getting harassed by a speed-hack idiot who turns up and empties it out. He has weird characters in his name.

Any tips on banning names with num-lock characters via in game console?

The best way to deal with speed hackers is to tell everyone to spawn in a vehicle and man the turret.
LoL I killed him a few times but then he started team killing :(

May have to resort to locking the server till the tools arrive.

Found these entries in the GCEngine config - does this mean VAC is not even enabled in the Unreal Engine? If so, would make some sense (to a newbie like me...lol) why no one seems to be getting caught...
[OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.OnlineSubsystemSteamworks]
SteamAuthTimeout=20.0
bUseVAC=false
GameDir=GCGame
Maybe Kaos had some issues and had to ship VAC in the off mode? & if so, hope it gets kicked on soon or their game's gonna die (at least PC wise) quickly IMO.

Admins or Kinsman - please feel free to delete any of this if it's exposing anything that shouldn't be. Last thing on earth I would ever want to do is encourage more hackers...:undecided

DOH! What a dufus I am  sorry guys & thx Maydax, makes sense it's settings for servers & the server browser does separate by VAC.

I somewhat understand why THQ/Kaos went the Steamworks route - but so wish it was otherwise & you guys (PBBans) were in the mix for this game. The only servers I'll play on usually (unless it has active clan members/admins) in BFBC2 and many other games stream to you guys...

Yet blops isn't nearly as bad for hackers as other titles even in the cod series. I think I have banned maybe 3 thus far, and other admins in the clan are about the same putting the total bans at around 15 or so.

Of course wallhacks/esp aren't always easy to spot.

Money. PB is not cheap and costs a lot more compared to VAC which comes with steamworks. Honestly since learning what PB costs, I would goto VAC too if I was a developer without deep pockets. Current issues with PB are: black PBSS, PBSS size is limited and lack of 64bit game support to name a few.

If PB was updated to fix the issues, support 64bit exe's and even modernize their website while adding some stats showing how well it really works then they might have a chance. However I doubt it will happen.

Howdy all, there is movement at the station on this, KAOS is keen to do what they can, and quickly.

MaydaX, please check your PM. :)

Also note you can follow players in 1st person view using Demos from any server with Demos Enabled.

Thx muchas Kinsman for the update & also all your feedback/support...:salute:

EDIT: OT, but Maydax, IMO - it seems like Evenbalance has just resigned itself to slowly go out of biz as they continue to lose awarding of Game(s) support. I would guesstimate Steamworks for free (for piracy control) is putting the death nail in their coffins & haven't heard they plan to have anything (or could with all the servers/infrastructure it probably takes) to compete with it.

I could be way wrong on the above (from just a player perspective...) and thus, just thought I'd ask you on it (if you want to comment on it)...

Thx

My server has got demos set to "True" in the config.

Where are they stored? How do we watch them? Is it through the game itself in the MP menu?

The game is frustrating at times currently and hard to admin, but fingers crossed KAOS will sort this soon.

Can I just suggest they be a bit more vocal & pro-active on the forums, especially their own forums as silence is deadly.

Thats why there is a Wiki :)

http://wiki.homefronter.com/wiki/Demo_Recording

We are providing the community with a demo recording feature which has the following benefits:

  • helps prevent cheating during sanctioned online and LAN games
  • helps determine rule violations and settles match disputes
  • strategizing
To begin the demo recording process, the server administrator is required to select a checkbox option within the dedicated server tool, or add bDemoRec=True to the playlist file . For players not running a dedicated server, there will be an option within the Create Game screen to begin their recording. Once this has been selected, the demo recording will automatically begin on match start.
We provide the community with a simple and efficient demo recording interface which does not require a console. This includes the implementation of specific in-menu UI (located off the multiplayer menu) to access a pre-recorded demo directory, whereby a user will choose which demo they wish to playback. This directory is saved locally on a user’s PC (My Documents/Games/Homefront/GCGame/Config/Demos). This directory is also where you place any downloaded demo files for playback.
Upon playback, players are presented with an easy to use interface with the following features:

  • Pause
  • Fast-Forward (x1, x2, x4)
  • Free look
  • Ability to switch cam mode between individual players in:
    • First person
    • Third person

Blind as a bat as normal.

I'm curious as to why I've got no demos. My server is definitely set to record demos as the bDemoRec=True is set in my config & I've only played on my server, but no demos.

Odd.

Good stuff Kinsman!

I think I'm going to play for a few hours tonight, shortly after I build a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) image for Windows 7.

PB is expensive? guess I never really thought about it...

I thought it wouldn't be because I didn't see regular updates in games even when they were fairly new.

Haven't checked lately because most have gone to VAC

Does VAC ever release figures on how many they ban or any news? I can't see it doing any damage or giving cheat makers any info if they just posted something like:

12000 cheats banned today in XX game. Total now 54300.

About $20k startup and $5k monthly last I heard. Not cheap by any means.

I seen figures posted it a few times, last being MW2. It's rare.

Get what you pay for!

Still it doesn't seem that expensive given the multi-million dollar budgets and sales figures.

Think I'll be reconsidering future purchases depending on whether they're going to use PB/VAC or don't release that info prior to launch.
