Hello...I am new to the forum website and new to hosting servers online for gaming purposes. I have recently gotten into COD UO and am getting interested in hosting a server for the game. I can host from another computer in my house. Problem is that we are only able to set to 12/Kbps for downloading for clients. This is slow :( especially since there are files that are 55MB. Just over a hour to download them :( no one wants to wait that long. So my question is...

Upon my research on hosting servers. Came across that you can redirect the download to another location, other than the server itself. Question is: is there a site that offers the download stuff at for free or is this something you have to pay for by purchasing a web domain and such. Thanks for any help if you can understand what I'm trying to say here. Thank you.

There used to be a free redirect at xtremeredirect.com but I see its closed.

You have to rent space for a redirect ... unless there's another site I don't know about. Otherwise you will be stuck with server side downloads. Another alternative is to provide download links to your playing partners for the maps you want to play.

You might do a search of the COD section here for "redirect"

Also...

When you mentioned renting space. Something like web hosting would work or no? Like godaddy.com or websites like that? Thanks again!

It would, however you'd want a server with is geographically located fairly close to your main player base; with a decent connection to the internet.

Otherwise the download will be painfully slow.

Watch your costs closely, it'll not be too long before you are getting close to the cost of renting a slot server. At this point all concerns of bandwidth go away as it's in a data-centre with proper internet access. Pick the right GSP and they will do the redirects and mods and all manner of things.

Here in the UK we can get CoD:UO servers for as little as 34p a slot! I have no idea if these guys are the cheapest. My clan have been with them for a number of years so I grabbed the costings from them. This forum is full of people with recommendations and services to offer.

Thanks to everyone for the help! Looks like I'm just going to take out the big map downloads from the server to avoid lengthy downloads for people connecting. Will have to try to search to see if there is a website that offers the maps and available to download them for others. Again, thank you all for your help!

sv_dl_maxrate
is the cvar that determinesthe maximum allowed download speed for your server in bits-per-second assuming
sv_allowdownloads 1
which is seperate from
sv_maxrate
which regulates maximum bandwidth per client also in bps

however you must calculate the peak and average upload bandwidth available on your connection as setting these cvars to higher than what yo can handle will result in failed or corrupted bounced downloads and laggy gameplay using
testmy.net
upload tests or express test
...or another non-plugin-dependent network speed testing site (NOT speedtest.net and the likes)
