Hey all. I just purchased a cod4 1.7 server from GameServers.com and have it all set up, but I have a few questions. I'm very new to messing with the ftp and config files for cod4 servers.

The goal is to have a bolt action sniper only server, with other guns and pistols disallowed. My clanmates and I are also interested in disallowing c4 for awhile to see how that fares. Is there a way I can modify the config file to accomplish these things?

Also:
How do I turn off killcam? How do I turn off the wait time for respawning? How do I add map packs, custom maps etc to the map rotation?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind my very limited experience with these things.

You can't do any of the things you are wanting to do with the weapons without a mod. And if you do that, be prepared for the traffic to the server to be very sparse. It takes a hell of a lot of time and effort to populate a mod server.

If you do decide that you might want to run a mod, I can suggest a couple to you. Just say the word, and I'll post more about them. Some of the mods for COD4 are pretty awesome, with weapons from MW2 and even the sentry gun from MW2.

As for server settings when you run the game stock (what is often termed as "ranked"), you need to edit your server config file. Gameservers.com will have provided you with one by default. You can access it through the admin control panel for your server. Look through it, and the dvars are often self-explanatory.

To turn off killcam, set this:

set scr_game_allowkillcam 0

To turn off prematch wait times, set these:

//--- Match Wait Time ---
set scr_game_playerwaittime 0
set scr_game_matchstarttime 0

on the prespawn wait - set the # to -1 for teamdeathmatch or war gametype.
setting it to 0 has the affect of a 10 second respawn time. And in order to get it to function, it had to be listed below the hardcore setting - hardcore here can be set to 0 or 1. When we ran hardcore, we liked it to be a realistic kill shot - not a foot shot = kill, and so set the hardcore player health separately -

set scr_player_maxhealth 42
set scr_hardcore 1
set scr_war_playerrespawndelay -1

In COD4 there is no tweakable dvar setting for hardcore health. Modders put one in, but the stock game doesn't have one. It is set to 30 and there is nothing you can do about it. I think you might be getting that confused with WaW which did have a dvar tweakable for hardcore health.

EDIT -

I just checked the stock COD4 files and see that there is no dvar tweakable for player health for any mode - softcore or hardcore. You just have to put up with IW's idea of what it should be set to.

Thankyou for the responses.

Tally, populating the server is only a secondary goal. To make a long story short, my clanmate and I want a bolt action sniping server we have control over, largely for one on one battles. I would love to see some ideas for mods, the thing about that is I have no idea how to install mods. I suspect that is where the FTP comes in. I'm in for a big learning curve.

You are correct that GameServers provides the config file for me and from my GameServer account I can tweak it. The only thing I have made work properly so far is making the server hardcore. I copy and pasted the configs you both gave me and was unable to get rid of the spawn time(I haven't had a friend come in with me so we could see about the killcam yet)...

Any further ideas are appreciated. =)

I believe Gameservers.com have to setup mods for you, as unless you rent a dedicated box from them, only they have access to your server's all-important command line. However, having said that, if you want to contact Gameservers.com and tell them you want to run a mod, then there are several very good mods around. I wont be ashamed to suggest to you a mod I am personally involved with - Demon Mod for COD4 v1.5 - which has a rifles-only mode switch. Check it out here:

http://www.demon-mod.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=183

Here is a screenshot of the rifles-only mode:

Players can only select the 5 rifles, but everything else is customizable, with the ability to edit your create-a-class ingame.

As for your spawntime, you need to edit the gametype settings. This may possibly be a seperate CFG file (often called gametypes.cfg) with all the gametype settings in it. If you stick the edited spawntime in your main server config file, and the gametypes.cfg file gets called later, it will override the edited setting.

Tally - yes, you're correct about the maxplayerhealth being available in CoDWW, not CoD4.

GS does have editable commandline in the cp - here's a sample of one of my old cod4 servers at GS

Code:
+set dedicated 2 +set net_ip 68.232.162.104 +set sv_maxclients 20 +set ui_maxclients 20 +set net_port 28960 +set sv_punkbuster 1 +set fs_game mods/tbd_x4v2 +exec server.cfg +map_rotate

The "tbd_x42" was the name of the mod folder - and indicates that it was v2 of the eXtreme mod for cod4, made by Joker.

As for the setup of the gameserver and redirect for custom files - mods and maps, if you want to use custom maps - here's a screenshot/text tut I made some time ago, that shows you the folders and files for the mods and usermaps folders on both the gameserver and the redirect.

http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=80335&postcount=7

But if you're wanting to just run the mod only, you could get by with just letting the connecting players download the mod files from the gameserver itself - the Demon mod listed above is only 4 mb total - wouldn't take more than a few minutes to download.

Redirect is website space for your files - GS will rent you redirect space for $6 a month unlimited space & bandwidth.
